It’s odd that a writer for Kotaku hasn’t played any other Diablo game seasons, or at least didn’t read up on them enough to have been surprised at how they work. I guess it’s a good article for people who have never played the Diablo genre and may be expecting something else, but it felt a bit out of place. It’s the fourth game in the series. It would be weirder if it didn’t follow the same relative game design.
Maybe if they came out with a “World of Diablo” MMO, people could expect to stick with single character through all content.
