Two kiwi chicks have been born in the wild around Wellington for the first time in more than 100 years, one year after the national bird was reintroduced to New Zealand’s capital.

I don’t think I knew kiwi had been released in the hills of Wellington. Is it something where you can go for a night walk and see kiwi or do we not have the population for that yet?
It seems like they’ve been released on private land at Terawhiti station and West wind farm. The best publicly accessible reserve would be West Wind recreation area, but that’s closed at night. So there’s no good legal option to see the kiwi until the population establishes enough that they make it to the council reserves in Karori.
Ah that’s a shame. Hopefully the population booms!

I doubt it. The Makara area is pretty huge, and there’s only walking trails in tiny party of it - iirc most of the tracks out there are on private land.
Not quite the same but you can see kiwi on night walks at Zealandia - one clambered over my foot on a tour a few years back.
I didn’t know about night tours at Zealandia! That sounds cool.
