Didn’t the use to put the astronauts into quarantine for a few days prior to launch. It avoids hangovers and the flu, in space.

Understandable. Dude was the first, I’m sure his odds at the time warranted a few shots.

His odds were good, actually ; despite the near-constant rumours around the USSR space program, Korolev did his best to make sure the launch was safe as it could get.

Rest assured, I’m in agreement. I’m just joking that the dude who was the first to use an explosion to leave the planet might have some nerves that needed calming.

Yes, but he’s also Russian which disqualifies this fact as extraordinary.

I mean I’d imagine the launch is quite a sobering experience. Might actually be a good thing to pre-game to relax a bit considering your strapped to a controlled bomb.

On the plus side, you can’t barf lying on your back facing upwards with 6G.

A rocket like that has almost zero pilot control.

In fact, for the longest time, astronauts were 100% payload. Now they’re 99% payload.

Chuck Yeager had broken ribs when he broke the sound barrier in the x1 for the world’s 1st time. He said from falling off a horse, but who knows. I like to think there was whiskey involved. He didn’t tell anyone because he’d get grounded and he wanted to fly it. I heard him tell the story live in person once as a teen, what a treat. Him and Bob Hoover, those guys have crazy pilot stories

      Wow.
In all fairness, he did do insanely dangerous work. Any flight could’ve been his last, so I guess he had to let off steam once in a while.
