If this picture is legit then it’s just a confusing rebrand. You now have 2 plans both about 10 dollars but one can’t use multiplayer and one has a much smaller selection of games. That’s confusing and lame imo. They should merge them into one.

You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy, in this case video games, software, consoles or gaming PCs.

I was skeptical about that phrase when I first heard it, now it seems like it will become a reality by 2030s

wtf does this mean? I can still buy Xbox games if I want to. I’m still thinking of doing that for the Game Pass games I want to continue playing, even if I stop paying for GP.

It was a phrase quoted directly from a video posted to YouTube on June 3, 2020 by the World Economic Forum titled “The Great Reset” in the middle of the economic crisis caused as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

And even if today you could buy those games, and own a physical copy, there’s no guarantee that the service that pushes the updates on that software will be around forever. Rendering the disk depending in a service itself.

So yes, there is a non-zero chance of some terrible catastrophe causing the games I paid for being lost forever - either needing a re-purchase, or simply becoming unplayable.

Here’s the trip: That is equally true for my disc-based games.

If I was an enthusiast collector, I might have an air-conditioned, sealed room from which I retrieve my Xbox discs using talcum-free latex gloves. I’m not. Because of that fact, any discs I own (none) are prone to constant wear and tear from the world around them. If they eventually break, it won’t be Microsoft’s fault, but it can happen.

So far, no game company has ever seen much profiteering in flipping a “Master death switch” that turns off access for tons of singleplayer games people paid for. At most, it happens for games that used some unnecessary live service, and were usually not well-loved anyway. And, unfortunately, it also happens to multiplayer games - because those games very much needed those servers for the features people liked about them, and usually only when the game is no longer popular (thus hard to find a match), and difficult for them to maintain those servers.

So I maintain my stance; that if I buy Deep Rock Galactic, I can be fairly sure it’ll be around 5 years from now when I still want to play it. 20 years later, I honestly may not even care; nor would I be sure any disc would still work either.

Yeah for real, long live emulation.

Emulation doesn’t even solve those server issues though. At most, it will solve the hardware gap where a console won’t let you run a disc - but I can’t think of any times that has happened on modern consoles.

If I buy a singleplayer game on digital, I’d actually generally expect that copy to last longer than if I bought it physically. At worst, someone might hack into my account, but 2FA systems have made that less common.

??? You just emulate the servers…like eldorito halo did or private MMO servers do. Did you think star wars galaxies still exists because Sony propped it up? No it was the users reverse engineering it and emulation.

Ah, sorry; my mind first went to console hardware emulation. Server emulation has been great when we manage it, I just don’t know if it’s always viable.

Often the developers couldn’t even share server programs if they wanted to if there’s some software license in there they don’t have free distribution permissions for.

Same price and XBLG? So itll be $5 a month instead of $10?

Also, they’re deleting the name Xbox Live? That’s a terrible decision if true.

Microsoft dropped “Live” branding from everything, Xbox was the only major service still using it. Makes sense.

Much like most new Apple products are called “Apple Something” rather than “iSomething”

Having both Live and GamePass is confusing, and GP has the better brand right now. Ask people about GamePass, and they love it. Ask people about Live, and they’re still grumpy that MS made them pay to play Halo 2 and 3 online.

Dunno, I’m just going to let my subscription expire and go back to buying the 1-2 games that come out each year. It comes out cheaper that way and you own the games.

You own the games? Really? Do you buy digitally? If yes, far from you own it. Do you buy physical copy? You think you own it, but then some games require a multi-GB day zero patch to start after installation. Some even require online connection and even log in.

The only platform that you own games on is GoG, everything else your SoL if Valve or EA or Microsoft day “Fuck you no more X game”

Gamepass is the better and cheaper way. It’s 3 Triple A games worth of cost over 1 year. Which is… A bargain for what you get.

There really needs to be a tier cheaper than Ultimate that includes online play but not PC Game Pass.

Yep that’s what I don’t understand just stick online play into the console game pass sub it would simplify things a lot

My take is that the console and PC tier are the same exact thing. ( one for console users, one for PC users). This give you online multiplayer and access to more game pass games for an extra $1 per month. Unless you need both core and console to get access to the extra games. That is totally not worth it if true.

Although this is based on “leaked” info that’s how it works basically now, you don’t get online multiplayer by subscribing to “Game Pass Console” you need to buy online play (Xbox Live) separately or just go for “Game Pass Ultimate” which bundles everything they offer. It just does not make sense. Currently, this is all the tiers or packages you can subscribe to:

          • Xbox Live Gold: Multiplayer, Games with Gold
          • Xbox Game Pass Console: Full Game Pass catalogue on Xbox Consoles, NO online multiplayer for Xbox consoles, NO EA Play for Console
          • Xbox Game Pass PC: Full Game Pass catalogue on PC, EA Play included for PC
          • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Full Game Pass catalogue for Xbox and PC, EA Play for Xbox and PC, Online Multiplayer for Xbox, Games with Gold for Xbox, Cloud Gaming

Since in their now official announcement on youtube that they are basically rebranding Gold to Game Pass Core and removing Games with gold while adding the 25 game pass games instead it just feels daft that they don’t add online play to Game Pass Console. They could still differentiate Ultimate with the whole PC/Console Game Pass and EA play bundle while keeping cloud gaming to ultimate only.

Yeah, if they want any level of sales of Console Gamepass over Gamepass Core, then they will need to add Multiplayer to Gamepass Console.

Now, for me I’m still going to be using Ultimate because I have a PC and now a Series X (Through the Xbox All Access program which also gives 2 years of Gamepass Ultimate)

It would be good if games with gold disappeared. Needing to redeem a game is just odd, especially if you can only play it as long as you have a subscription. It’s also a bit unfair to people who subscribe later, they’re missing a lot of the previous games. Just add everything to game pass.
