        Bro, I’m on Lemmy, Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads and I’m not sure I even know what exactly it is and how they talk to each other. I just use the service.

          I’ve got no idea how the stuff works, but you’ve already said everything a normal person needs to understand what’s going on: a bunch of different places that talk to each other.

          I mean, you don’t really need to know the technical details of how they talk to each other to understand that they do talk to each other, and use it.

          Think of it like this: you can use the highways without knowing how asphalt is made.

    tbh I never quite understood the email analogy because emails are a completely different format, even if the general idea of communication across providers is the same. Comparing it to interoperability between messengers (e.g. accessing Signal groups via Telegram, if that were possible) made it way easier to understand.
