Scarlett Johansson’s iconic portrayal of Samantha, an AI voice assistant, in “Her” has set a precedent for AI companions in media. However, the actress is now embroiled in a controversy with OpenAI, which allegedly created a voice for its ChatGPT system that sounds eerily similar to her own. Johansson claims that she was initially approached by OpenAI to be the voice behind ChatGPT, but declined the offer. Despite this, the company went ahead and created a voice, dubbed “Sky”, that has sparked widespread comparisons to her own voice. Johansson is now seeking transparency and an explanation from OpenAI, accusing them of intentionally mimicking her voice without her consent.

Wait that would mean a tech company is being dishonest and skrewing people over. That never happens… Right?

Idk, i don’t even think they sound similar. I get the problem with it, but someone could hire a voice actor to sound like her and do the same thing and that’s legal?

We just have to figure out whether it’s cheaper to hire a soundalike or pay someone to clip bits from movies for training data and that’s probably the answer.

I think it’s the intent that matters, based on Scarlett’s recall of events. Had Sam not asked her in the first place, there would’ve be more room for OpenAI to argue in their favor.
