That is absolutely not a blow to ROMs by any means. There are plenty of good alternatives. For messaging, alternatives are even better. Dialer apps are just basic ones buy they do exists.
I do think it will have ramifications in the long run. Google is slowly closing the Android source. At some point it will affect core functions.
That is why we need to work towards having postmarketOs and similarprojectso going.
Let’s hope that Linux Phone OSes will be able to be daily drivers until then.
LineageOS already maintains these apps from what i understand
These apps are open source, so a OS developer should be able to forward port the deprecated app into their newer OS release. Kinda fear monger a bit here
Apparently they’ve been doing this for a long time, because Google haven’t been maintaining it. When the forks have submitted improvements upstream they’ve been rejected. LineageOS has been running its own dialer for years, which many ROMs use.
I’m amazed that Google was able to get away with dumping in developing Android.
Good thing I barely ever use the phone part of my cell phone anymore.
Anyone serious and fully commited to privacy does not use cell service, they use a VoIP, which requires an app to connect to VoIP provider for calling and messaging, so Phone and Messages can not be used anyways since it’s not cell/mobile service.
they can’t kill the clock
I use simple SMS anyway, I honestly would love to see a modern dailer for degoogled android. I wonder if we could get the little verified caller checkmarks on a Foss dailer app
Imagine if the dialer could sync a region specific spam blocklist

GrapheneOS will be fine. There are other open source apps available for carrier-based calls and texts. Development of the AOSP apps can also be continued Source: https://nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1669196420333682689

I’m not sure if GrapheneOS uses the stock dialer and SMS apps
Can confirm, they are the stock apps
