The show’s in its 35th year, I think we’re going to start seeing more of this. Anyone that was 30 when the show started is coming up on eligibility for Social Security and Medicare. I’m curious how long the core cast will stay active, and if the show attempts to recast or finally calls it quits when one or more of them step down.
I don’t think any of the original Sesame Street muppetiers are still working, for instance, but Big Bird and Elmo are still going strong.
Haven’t watched regularly in years, so I’m unsure how prevalent Milhouse has been in recent seasons.
Still seemed sad.
Milhouse is the main one but also Jimbo and occasionally Rod/Todd. All those characters still pop up from time to time.
Milhouse isn’t retiring, lol, the actress that voices his is, they’re gonna recast for the Milhouse voice. Lady made 25 million dollars voicing Simpsons characters in the last 35 years, she’s done fine she’s old now, and want to do other things
It is sad to me. The Simpsons is never going to get a definitive, dignified ending where it goes out on a high. It is just going to keep going on and on, slowly losing original bits and pieces. Swapping out a long time voice actor because the show has been going on so long that they aged out and retired is pretty depressing.

I actually wonder if this will be the beginning of the end.
We lost Edna a few years back and they retired her character. The voice change for Carl/Hibbert is noticable (Carl has gotten better, but Hibbert is still wrong). It’s obvious Marge is getting older. Apu has been largely absent the past few seasons. Now Milhouse/Jimbo will need to be replaced.
The current season has been one of the strangest seasons by far, not necessarily in a bad way, but it’s been a shift.

Last I heard, Apu was being removed because he’s become a stereotype that’s reaching into the racism spectrum.
Yeah I’ve watched the documentary and I understand where some folks are coming from, but I’ve also read the opposite. At this point the decision has been made and Hank Azaria isn’t going to voice him anymore, so it’s not a debate worth having. At this point Apu is gone and I doubt he’ll be brought back.
Eh, I still enjoy it, although I do find it amusing how the family becomes more and more anachronistic and how they have to keep changing the decades flashbacks occur in as the show ages.
In the 90s, they did a flashback, and Homer/Marge were in high school inthe 1970s.
Now didn’t they do one where they were in high school in like 2005?
Funnily enough, there’s an old episode that shows a class reunion in 2024 where Marge and Homer are really old.
Contrast with Futurama, which got like five separate definitive endings (so far!), and nailed at least two of them.
The movie was supposed to be that ending. Funny thing too is the South Park movie was supposed to be the ending of that show.
Let us hope Family Guy doesn’t get a movie.
Family Guy has always been a piece of shit
Eh…family guy could have ended after likd 6-7 seasons and it would have been fine. Aren’t they on like season 25 now?
They were cancelled early. The comeback season was good at the time. I agree, If they ended it around 5 or 6 it would be fondly remembered.
It’s an interesting question. Some characters are quietly retired (Phil Hartman’s), while others are killed off in-series (Krabapple). Eventually all of the original cast will age out or pass away. Will they continue Ship of Theseus style by replacing people?
Retiring the entire show seems to be impossible, although I’d argue that it should have been done 15 years ago.
Or with enough audio references they will just replace them all with AI.
I wouldn’t exactly say Phil Hartman “quietly retired”.
He was straight up murdered.
No - I meant the show retired the character without much comment on the murder.
