Thanks, i hate demon Patrick
I thought a rebel yell sounded like:
“MORE! MORE! MORE!!!”
I started reading Gods and Generals ten years ago, then realized I was almost at the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg so I read The Killer Angels exactly 150 years after the events of each day, and finished The Last Full Measure soon after. After going through all that history, I was curious to find what the Rebel Yell actually sounded like. Fortunately around that time a couple early sound recordings of confederate veterans (old men at that point) had been unearthed and put online, so I could hear the real deal.
It’s the “woo” professional wrestler Ric Flair does. I have a hard time finding that as intimidating/terrifying as everyone says.
I really don’t get it either. I mean, limited credit where it’s due, almost any yell from a big group of folks about to try to kill you is gonna be scary? It could be silly on purpose and the distance between the sound and the intent would be haunting on its own.
But. The “Rebel Yell” sounds pretty fucking lame. And I’ve met some seriously terrifying rednecks, it’s all pretty much the same sound. It’s like weird wildlife where they’ll kill the fuck out of you but don’t sound very scary lol
Wait, Soviets shouted “oorah”? Like the marines say??
Today they mostly yell “vpered sukablyat” and “is a drone!”
Usually, the Russian cry is translated as “Ura!” or “Urah!”
Are we sure they’re not saying Uruk Hai?
