Home to the Darvaza Crater, a massive molten pit that has spewed flames and noxious gases for decades, Turkmenistan has the world’s worst record when it comes to climate-heating methane leaks.
Is that even possible? That thing is rather big.
It’s not just that one that’s on fire; they’ve got a significant amount of extraction happening (which leaks) and pipelines to move the methane around (which also leak)
So basicly the US wants to invest in Turkmenistan to buy gas. Plugging is the right thing to do, but this sounds more like plug it and then take out the gas in a controlled manner to sell it to China, US or Europe. Turkmenistan is a comic book level dictatorship, but with very real suffering and fossil fuel investments are basicly always bad.
