Interested in how the Steam Deck handles DF in terms of performance and controls. How’s the experience and does the game feel hindered in any way compared to desktop?

I’m also interested in DFHack / mod performance and installation, I’ve not played with a Steam Deck at all but portable DF has piqued my interest.

Thx!

it runs great, no problems on the performance front. the controls do not lend themselves very well to gameplay on the steam deck though. there’s some good community-made control layouts that kind of help, but due to the interface being catered towards having a mouse available, be prepared for a slow and tedious time.

If that doesn’t sound like a deterrent to you, then by all means full steam ahead! be aware that Dwarf Fortress doesn’t have cloud save functionality, so if you were wanting to play the same fort on both PC and steam deck, it’s unfortunately not possible.

Syncthing to the rescue! It can automatically sync saves between devices, and I use it for a couple games to sync between my steam deck and my desktop

I remember installing it at some point and it didn’t take me long to uninstall, but I don’t remember the reason. I’ll install it again here to check.

I play it on my Linux desktop with my Steam controller with a custom config. Runs geat and feels comfy with the controller.
