Wow, this makes it so much worse…

Lol - how.obvious do they want their cashgrab to be? It’s as if they don’t even want to sell the low-spec version and just want people to feel better about the pro

You’re making this comment as if you aren’t their target though. Im not buying one, but I also don’t get worried I’m such a power user that if I did I would miss out on something.

As snazzy labs pointed out, the new SOC is called A17 PRO which probably means that next year the baseline models will not get that chip.

They will probably get just the A17 sans pro, I have a large suspicion that USB 3.X will be exclusive to the pro chips.

It’s all speculation but it would be a very Apple like thing to do.

I get it, usb2 is old- you guys really copying hundreds of gigs to and from your phones that much? I’ve literally never copied files on/off via cable, not since the iPhone 4. Between airdrop, wifi, and 5G unlimited data I’ve never had the need.

I copy vids from Plex to my phone over wifi at close to 100MBps- that’s like 40 gigs of movies in 6 or 7 minutes without even having to go to my computer.

I just don’t really understand the use case here- would you guys pay extra to have 40Gbps thunderbolt on your phone? Would you actually use it? Do you really exercise high volumes of drive capacity regularly?

It’s more that you have to go out of your way to design a device these days with such horrendous throughput. Nobody else even thinks about it. Usb3 isn’t really more expensive to include then 2. They’re just isn’t any design reason besides fuck the EU to make it like this.

And that’s what makes it newsworthy. The Fuck the EU part.

Why are you taking this stance? Why defend this decision? Apple fans are something else…

I’m not defending- I’m trying to understand the “outrage”. The article seems pretty clear it was more a tech limitation of existing silicon rather than a specific choice of the design, but who knows.

I’m not buying one either way, so think what you want!

I still find it convenient in some use cases.

No, but I can easily imagine there are people who it would.

Can you still fast charge with usb2?

Like you, haven’t transferred files via cable in over a decade.

Yeah I can dump like 20-30 watts into my iPhone 12. It goes from 0 to 100 in under an hour, maybe 50% in 20 min.

I didn’t look what kind of input wattage new phone handles but I doubt it went backwards. Even MagSafe charges at about 15 watts.

It’s more useful for Android since you can easily use an Android as a temporary flash drive if you want.

But, just look at what Apple said that 3.0 is useful for. For example they said that you can record 4K60fps video straight to external storage.
