Here is what I don’t get about Wine. Even in 2023 it seems to fail to handle basic Windows software written in 1996-1995 like the classic convert.exe (https://joshmadison.com/convert-for-windows/). This program and others run flawless in ReactOS for instance, why not under Wine?
Another things I don’t get include:
- Why is Wine is still stuck on that Windows 98 style GUI instead of a more modern thing;
- Flickering;
- How can ReactOS, that shares code with Wine, run everything way more smoothly?
For reference I’m using Debian 12, Wine 8.0. Also tried with Soda 7.0, same results.
“Wine sucks so much it can’t even run this obscure program nobody uses!”
I picked that program because it is old, because it has ZERO dependencies and runs fine under every Windows and ReactOS version since ever. Guess it kind of shows how quickly wine fails.
But if you’re not happy, here’s how Microsoft Office 2019 performs out of the box:
Wtf is happening before and after the title? That character?
Adobe products usually also fail to work…
I mean can you do it better? The wine project is so incredible and let’s us play mostwindowws games on Linux thought proton andyou’re just dunking on it because a random app that nobody uses doesn’t work shame on you

From the website you linked:
Convert runs quite well on Linux and UNIX using Wine. If you do this, you may need to change the tab layout to use a single row by going into Options > Preferences > Tabs, and clear the Multiple Lines option.
Yes, yes it does, but that’s a workaround due to the fact that Wine doesn’t seem to support tabs in multiple rows, I’ve noticed this glitch with other applications as well.
