Cell service on the TTC needs to be a priority
Routers exist but the big 3 didn’t want to pay a fee to connect to them and provide service, Iirc Freedom is the only company that does. They didn’t like that the TTC didn’t go with one of them to install the infrastructure. Either way cell service isn’t going to do anything to prevent this.
What we’re seeing here are symptoms of larger societal problems. People are being pushed to their limits and we refuse to find social services. This is the result.
Rogers just bought the freedom tech so if you’re on Rogers you’ll get internet in a few months.
Oh absolutely we need to fund social services better, but in the meantime can we at least push (our reps to push) the Big 3 to allow people to stay connected.
It won’t fix the problem, but that’s not what I’m talking about when I say we should be able to call or text on the subway.
Bring. Back. Asylums.
I seriously can’t believe this is still an issue. I remember having a train break down mid-tunnel and being unable to call work to let them know I’d be late… a decade ago.
I’ve been to numerous other countries and not only had no issues with cellular service underground (malls, subways) but it was fast as well. Canadians get shafted so badly by the incumbent providers
Take it up with Robellus. They can’t come to an agreement.
Yeah the triopoly isn’t helping, but at the same time we don’t need the ISP’S to install stuff like repeaters for the common frequencies. Many individuals and businesses already do this for e.g. buildings with otherwise poor reception and it could be done as a common-infra project without their blessing entirely.
Good point
“It’s going to be either you live for another day, or you get stabbed on TTC, or you get a car, and it’s not really that easy. It makes me feel like TTC is actually not really that safe anymore and they’re not doing anything about it.”
Nobody tell this person about how cars are significantly more dangerous than the TTC…
Even if you’re a pedestrian or a cyclist, your biggest risk during a commute is getting hit by someone else’s car. The TTC is statistically the safest way to commute.
I’m a big anti-car person (I’m middle aged and gave never owned one) and that made me roll my eyes. Someone should tell them about that, actually. And that the media doesn’t report on that is ridiculous (though I suppose it’s not the point of this particular story).
Eglinton station was shutdown yesterday for several hours because of this…
(Might be rich typing this on a GO train but) the TTC is actually quite safe overall. To me it’s just very annoying that one deranged person with a knife can cause hours of delays.
What the fuck the video starts there are 2 people squaring off. Zero mention of what happened prior or any curiosity. I see no reason to assume the man pictured was the agressor. What about the other guy?
Just saw the video on TikTok. No one even attempted to trip the guy or anything. They all just ran.
Sad.
easy to say…
I am not faulting people for running once the guy got caught and was actively being stabbed.
When you’re on a full subway, and someone is being chased, why didn’t anyone stick out their leg? It’s not like the knife man would know who did it. In fact, people pulled their legs IN to allow the knife wielder to continue.
It’s just wild to me. No faith in humanity.
