A man who was not first or second best player for PSG. Was not in the top 5 players of his own national team. Invisible all WC(yes, invisible, dont count the penalties that werent even won by him). PSG, there were better players than him. Clubs in general, better players than him. Its a joke

      Surprise? No.

      The wrong decision? Yes.

The world cup needs to have a separate award because Haaland could not do more to deserve the award except be born from a more prominent footballing nation.

Every other year you’d be as well calling it the award for best player in the team that won the champions league

I think he also needs to have a significantly better season than his competition. Not marginally.

Messi had comparable XGI. And just like Haanland, he also won the league.

It’s the rest of the trophies that made the difference.

I think Messi deserved it. It’s not just being a participant for being a world cup winner but the manner in which he won it. The leadership, the dribbling, the playmaking, the heart. If anything came short Argentina would have lost. He had that much pressure on him

I disagree. It’s not so much winning the World Cup as how he won it. Losing to Saudis game one. What a comeback. He is a complete player who inspired his entire team to be their absolute best. El Capitan.

Haaland is not a complete player. I know he scored goals but he just happens to be a huge dude who runs forward and his teammates give him amazing assists.

Messi is very much a complete player. The goals. The assists. The dribbling. The leadership. The inspiration. Which can you name?

Very much the right decision. The others will get their turn.

Let’s give this on to haaland and strip Modric of the one he won. By your logic Messi would still end up with 8 balón d or.

Why would Messi win the ballon d’or in the year Modric won?

Modric won, not just because he had good performances, but Madrid won the UCL and Croatia reached the final.

Messi may have been ‘better’, but his teams did not do well in the UCL or World Cup. Knocked out in UCL and World Cup in the Quarter Finals.

I read the last line first assuming it was ranking number 5. Then for a split second thought “wait did Messi (Inter Miami) finish 5th and Messi (PSG) finish 1st?

Yes I fit that all into a split second thought and shared it here for some reason…
