Saying: “Google says stalking is a crime in 50 US states.” gave me 29 downvotes. The question was: “Would it be legal to crowdfund a licensed private detective to investigate a public figure and publish their results publicly?”
A software developer and Linux nerd, living in Germany. I’m usually a chill dude but my online persona doesn’t always reflect my true personality. Take what I say with a grain of salt, I usually try to be nice and give good advice, though.
I’m into Free Software, selfhosting, microcontrollers and electronics, freedom, privacy and the usual stuff. And a few select other random things, too.

Heheh, valid objection. Guess Newton wasn’t the only smart person in history 😆 And drama has always been part of human history… But we still hear those names over 300 years later. Along with a lot of other names of people whose results are taught in university today. But yeah, that hypothetical situation (Newton’s achievements in mathematics being replaced by Leibnitz) would make a good Dr. Who episode.
No. I don’t know why woelkchen said there are X other mods in the community. TragicNotCute didn’t respond (yet) but it’s only been 23h and they don’t seem very active with moderation anyways, their last mod action is from 3 months ago. I guess they should have seen my DM by now.
Do you have any specific course of action in mind? I’d say lets wait another day and give them some time. But I’m not holding my breath.
I think Alibaba and Aliexpress are less tightly connected with the Chinese government. They also ship stuff from China, but they aren’t specialized in the cheapest of the cheapest. Plus as far as I know they’re more a marketplace platform. They handle the money and connect you with an individual seller in China. The platforms are a bit less convenient to use. I think it’s a bit like eBay vs Amazon, if you want to compare it to western companies.
Because people like cheap stuff. Need a phone case? Harry Potter merchandise knockoffs, socks, a brush for your arts project? TEMU has that for $0.61, delivered to your door.
And as far as I know it’s sponsored by the Chinese government. They chip in with forced labor camps. And they also invested massively in advertising and making it a thing.
I wouldn’t buy from them. As far as I know the app is also spying on the users etc. But yeah, enough people seem to buy stuff there. I suppose it’s cheap and convenient and people don’t care. It’s kind of depressing. I agree.
Just read the government is currently also on a VPN banning spree. I guess that list is going to change frequently now, if people continue with watching Youtube, Instagram and Twitter.
My top apps are all shopping apps, discount apps, WhatsApp, ChatGPT, TEMU, video streaming and TikTok is there, too. VPN comes further down along with dating apps and then it gets quite random. Guess in Germany our biggest worry is to save some money when grocery shopping…
Is that because of the political situation? Like repression, internet censorship… Or an unrelated trend?
Possible. But then we’d need somebody else to develop calculus and write a Principia Mathematica and lay the groundworks for the age of enlightenment.
Bring a book or newspaper/magazine. Those people are the minority but it’s still fairly common to see people read on the train or at the bus stop.
Yes. And mathematics. And a key figure in the scientific revolution. Probably also one of the most intelligent people ever.
I think that’s a good idea. We already have lots of news, world news and articles about politics here. And I always like to see this platform being used for other kinds of conversation. And not just the link aggregator part of it.
I’m playing “Stray” right now. I think it’s awesome. (It is from 2022 btw)
Why not a linked list? Or a hash-table?
Yeah, the article also doesn’t make it clear enough what it’s even talking about…
I found a description of Proton Mail’s e2ee: https://proton.me/blog/what-is-end-to-end-encryption
Seems it’s using PGP behind the scenes?! And sending unencrypted mails to everyone who isn’t using Proton or PGP… How is that handled in the UI? Is that transparent to the user once encryption gets turned off? Because then I don’t see any issue. Yeah, they also offer regular mail. But that’s not a crime. It’d be of concern if the UI misleads the user into thinking a mail is encrypted when it isn’t.
Which kind of software and end to end encryption solution is this referring to? PGP or something? Because then every single argument would be wrong. Except for searching body text via the server.
It’s far more pronounced on the internet anyways. People come here to vent. And the (social media) platforms incentivise them to do so, the way they’re build. I’d say it’s far less a thing in real life.
For transparency reasons: I’ve DMed @[email protected] (As suggested in the earlier conversation… To have another mod look at it.)
I think the other mods in [email protected] are more nominal members. I can’t see any activity from them. It’s mainly @[email protected] doing all the work there. Ruud is the instance admin and probably the last person we want to bother with small drama, and the other two don’t have any activity federated to me for months.
(And maybe you want to contact the inactive mods in your community and see if you want to replace them.)
Schwierig.
Though it’s a crutch. I also regularly get one or two random downvotes for random uncontroversial stuff. I get some proportion of downvotes if I give a nuanced opinion and/or dispell urban legends. And I regularly get very few (if at all) votes by helping someone in the comments or giving the correct answer to a question, while other people get 800 upvotes for posting a meme picture, which they just took from someplace else… Don’t get me wrong, this might be as good as we can do. But I don’t think voting works particularly well for what it’s trying to achieve.
And it doesn’t really help me. If I do the default sort, it’s mostly news articles and pictures that show up and have a score of several hundreds. And the interesting posts are buried somewhere. So I kind of disregard the votes while browsing Lemmy, making them kind of meaningless for me and that purpose. YMMV. But I think I either need to unsubscribe from all those communities, or use several distinct subscription feeds.
