There’s 2 missing adaptation policies.

1. Deforestation around homes replaced with solar. Maybe fruit bushes under solar panels to help against mudslides. Rebuilding homes with metal roofs and solar to make them fireproof. Deforesting is easier insurance management than retrofitting homes.

2. Utilities owning CA government to stop home and community solar has to stop. Home+community solar replacing forests is an alternative to fire risks from transmission lines, and charging rate payers instead of shareholders whenever they cause a fire.

Solar not only provides economic value instead of just costs, it helps with both long term path to 3C, and insurance/government burden to property survivability. Solar energy is more decarbonization than trees.

Destroying and rebuilding homes (AFAIU, most destroyed were over 60 years old) is a tough option. Really, removing forest for solar is the best, only practical, solution. This should be global adaptation to high value forest homes/communities, because drought risk is everywhere.

UBI gives you “moving expense money”. Greedy landlords gives builders incentive to build more to give you alternatives. If you don’t want to work, then moving to smaller communities is a more affordable choice, and you can move before you have a job lined up. A problem with welfare/UI is not just that any job income get’s clawed back at 50%, but you need to stay close to the same welfare office to keep getting benefits.

Income taxes, especially if investment income is not given preferential treatment, is even with a flat tax on first $100k income, with surtaxes on higher incomes, something that impacts the rich/successful while still making them more rich. You don’t need to cling to “only a wealth tax or burn it all down”. Wealth generates investment income. Taxing that properly is all that is needed.

Freedom is a humanist value. Curtailing freedom to do wrong is of course acceptable. Something most people here won’t like is that the best gender/sexuality is hetero-CIS. From climate statistics of 2024, record monthly rainfalls over 24 hours were 52% higher than average, and record low rainfalls 38% higher than average, globally. 2023 was bad too. These stats, in a non global warming world, would drop each year as the bar is higher each year. Costs of disasters are growing exceptionally.

As bad as the current global warming impact is on just the US’s sustainability from disaster/insurance spending, calls for subsidized insurance doesn’t help. We may already have reached a point where climate disasters cost more than the profit potential of oil industry. Certainly more than their tax payments. One simple “helpfulness” in rebuilding is metal roofs that last 50 years and can support solar for that long too. They are fire proof. Less forest, with utility/community solar, becomes necessary from just an insurance perspective. Also related to forest fire problem, CA electricity rates are sky high because somehow utility negligence for past fires has to be paid by state wide rate payers instead of shareholders.
