(RNS) — The declaration commits Christian leaders to preaching on moral issues and rejecting a political movement it says is exploiting traditional values to undermine democracy.

“The very things that the prophets and that Jesus put at the center as primary are not being heard in the pews in this country,” Barber said. “And that is a deficit that we believe is a form of pastoral malpractice.”

    Good for them, there needs to be a stronger pushback against the growing tendency to coopt the Christian faith for the purposes of a political agenda. It’s all too prevalent at every level already.
