Wow, what an embarrassment for Australia.

I don’t quite understand where this money is going, either. Does Australia not have existing swimming pools and athletics tracks with grandstand seating, near to some existing large hotels? It seems like any large sporting event (see also, the world cup and the Olympics) demands that everything be built brand spanking new for a one-off tournament. Completely pissing money away, couldn’t agree more with cancelling it.

You’re not wrong, maybe they should look to distribute the games in the future, no need for it all your be in one place.

Give smaller places opportunities to host events where they would have less need for investment and see more returns.

Did you read the article? That’s what they tried to do in Victoria, and it’s part of the reason for the blowouts.

Yeah, I guess I meant more geographical diverse. They were going regional but still in similar areas anda lot of the cost came from infrastructure to handle large numbers of people, but individual, dispersed towns I assume could more easily handle smaller influxes.

What smaller towns have world class sporting facilities though? You arent going to be holding world class games of footy at the local school field. You arent going to build a world class venue in a small town because after the event it would go unused. At least the huge multipurpose venues in cities get used year round after the initial event.
