I am looking to upgrade my homes (2 floor,~3600 sq/ft, gigabit fiber) network. My current set up is a Netgear AC1900 WiFi Router (R7000) with two routers in AP mode that I had laying around. It has gotten us by but tends to be unreliable at times. I would also like to upgrade the wifi to wifi-6 as I have a decent amount of compatible devices.

I don’t have any enthusiast level demands. Just simple browsing, streaming, gaming and productivity stuff as my partner and I WFH part time. I already have wifi-cameras that I don’t think I’ll be swapping out anytime soon. The bandwidth demand can be a concern as there can be 6 people that can be online at times.

What I am looking for is a wireless network that can take advantage of the gigabit internet while being able to roam seamlessly around the house without any drops or slow downs.

Is Unifi what I am looking for? If so what would my network stack look like?

A router, switch, controller (cloudkey?) and 3 AP’s?

One of my concerns is the router. It seems like Unifi only has two options the UDM and USG. The UDM is very overkill for my needs but the USG seems to out-dated and OOS. Am I SOL and have no other option but the UDM if I go with Unifi?

Are there any suggestions or things I should look out for?

USG has definitely been ignored. I’d recommend against it since since they seem to be heavily leaning towards the UDM. You could also get a different brand of router, but it’ll depend on how important having a “single pane of glass” is to you.
