I think you’re right. I believe it’s not AI because of the imperfections, but also because the model has spacers in their ears, and they’re consistent on both sides. It could be really careful prompting, but I think it’s real, and accomplished how you describe.

They probably can’t, just like Geordi La Forge from Star Trek TNG couldn’t see through his solid white contacts during scenes where he had to remove his visor.
Levar Burton, the actor that played Geordi, has said those were about the worst scenes he had to act in, wearing opaque contacts.
Pretty sure it’s gold contacts with gold paint dripped onto the skin below them.

However, maybe there are partially reflective lenses that act more like mirrored sunglasses?
