Past online messages from Gray were uncovered Friday, revealing the teen’s history of anti-LGBTQ+ bias. The Washington Post and CNN each reported that Gray had previously threatened a mass shooting against queer people specifically, posting an image of a family being supportive towards their trans daughter to a Discord server and writing, “I need to put an end to that. … im on the edge of a lgbtq massacre.”

Aside from blatant right-wing deceit, it’s shocking to see an adolescent think in this hateful way. And it sounds like his redneck father didn’t help matters. I feel for the victims of this horribly violent attack and their loved ones. This is so sad.

No, it’s not shocking that stochastic terrorism has the result of murderous intent. This situation is being worked towards, each and every day, just because some people feel they benefit from scapegoating an outgroup.

        1. Scapegoat an outgroup as unhealthy to society.
        2. Tell a group they are part of the stronger majority and are morally superior
        3. Infrahumanise the outgroup to deepen the moral divide (“cat litter boxes in schools! Forced gender reassignments!”)
        4. Repeat the lies until they are believed simply through repetition
        5. Say that talking about evidence is dirty liberal homosexual awfulness because REAL PEOPLE LISTEN TO THEIR HEARTS GODDAMMIT (faith-based group identity)
        6. Pretend to be surprised when the outgroup you’ve said are pondscum unfit to be in society get targeted with gun violence in a country where guns are very available, and send thoughts and prayers
        7. When someone calls this stochastic terrorism, refuse to acknowledge that you understand what that term means
        8. Consolidate status and power as a figurehead of a hate movement

when you’re an adolescent, your world view tends to mirror the worldview of your parents and the handful of other adults surrounding them. The worldview being espoused by this boy probably came from his father… and he’s likely directly to blame for inciting the violence. (along with the rest of the family.)

Not excusing the kid, mind you. the kid is old enough to know that you shouldn’t be a murderous asshole.
