Ottawa has said it would respond with countermeasures should the tariffs materialize

U.S. President Donald Trump still plans to make good on his promise to issue tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Saturday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday.

Leavitt said Trump is also still weighing fresh tariffs on China for Saturday.

Trump said last week he would announce 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Feb. 1 unless the countries help tackle the twin issues of U.S. fentanyl trafficking and immigration.

Canadian officials have said Ottawa would respond with countermeasures should Trump’s tariffs materialize.

Even if we don’t counter with Tariffs both countries will be worst off. Volatility of the situation alone means that most people don’t want to commit to anything.

The next step in this is probably him carving exceptions for very select companies that’ll either pay him off or just go straight in his pocket
