Summary

Mexico is waiting for a new response from Google regarding its mapping service’s use of “Gulf of America” in the U.S., while displaying “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that Google will face a lawsuit if it doesn’t restore the original name, arguing it violates Mexico’s sovereignty over 49% of the Gulf. The U.N. also recognizes the historic name.

Google defended its policy, saying it followed longstanding mapping practices after Trump’s renaming declaration amidst rising tensions between Mexico and the U.S.

The issue has also sparked press freedom concerns in the U.S.

For most of history private businesses were in charge of maps. They’d put fake towns and islands on them as a form of copy protection.

One thing humans don’t do is change, so get used to this stupidity continuing.
