And even if you could still unlock it, if I have to go to an external website to do it, let alone PAY FOR THE THING I BOUGHT AND PAID FOR, that thing is going into the trash.

You’re almost definitely thinking of xiaomi, which almost always sell as unlockable carrier independent models.
