In opening statements the prosecution said that Vallow Daybell conspired with brother Alex Cox to kill Charles Vallow and cash in on a life insurance policy, while espousing the belief that he was possessed by an evil spirit.

The case has drawn significant public attention in part because Vallow Daybell, 51, has doomsday-focused religious beliefs. She isn’t a lawyer but has chosen to represent herself in the six-week trial.

Doomsday-focused religious beliefs, interesting. I wonder if these religious beliefs were convenient for the purpose of murdering her family.

Mormon. Her religion is Mormonism and she received a great deal of social validation for her delusions leading up to these crimes.

Even the ‘nice’ Mormons believe terrible dangerous things, they deserve a share of the blame for a culture that normalizes fantasy.

Source: I grew up in that damned town. Delusional monsters everywhere.

There have been lots of shocking Mormon murders over the years. Who would have thought that having the sort of mind that could accept such a bizarre fantasy as truth, would be a mind twisted enough to commit weird religious murders?

Nope, she is smack-dab in the statistical middle of that culture. Mormons work very hard together to prop up their delusional and harmful system. She was endorsed, enabled and socially rewarded by everyone around her in real life, not just online.

That’s a really frightening thought, considering the state of her 2 youngest children. They really believed those kids were demons, and made the kids believe it themselves too. Made them jump into cacti, and work outside without food and water for days. Treated wounds with cayenne pepper and honey. I’ll never be able to forget any of that. They tortured those kids.

That type of abuse is tragically common in my direct personal experience. God help any neurodivergent or non-conforming kids in that culture. My folks weren’t sadistic like that, but still extremely invalidating.

Please be kind to anyone you meet who is trying to get out of their grasp. They definitely need your help. It takes incredible strength to commit the social suicide necessary to get away from them.
