I see you seek this kind of participation out.

what kind of participation… conversation? … no…? but maybe someone could say yes? Here’s my workflow:

    • get distracted
    • open lemmy
    • scroll new/all and find random posts
    • sometimes comment

“On the internet, not everyone knows you’re an idiot.” being your profile statement.

“On the internet, not everyone knows you’re a cat”. But also, I’m not able to use my brain correctly so I feel like a complete idiot when I’m not medicated. Even when medicated, I’m not so sure I do the smartest things. Easier to just own it and self-report a little.

And that I’m not the first Lemmy community you have come along to concerning your copyright topics.

Yeah, copyright and law interests me a bit. Not enough to want to become a lawyer, but enough for me to try to understand the law in the ways it applies to me. I’ve got lots of other interests too: programming, gaming, electronics, radio, djing, feminism, leftism…

Are you being paid by copyright holders to do this or something?

Nope, but that’s probably not enough to convince you. Instead, to convince you let’s try to think about what value I could possibly be bringing to copyright holders. People who hold copyright on a work can issue takedown requests, and it goes like this: email the webmaster and if they don’t comply, email the webmaster’s host, and if they don’t comply start firing the lawyers. But the thing is, they do comply, becuase web site owners don’t want to get sued. That’s a pretty powerful device, don’t you think? They don’t even need to argue with people on the internet, they just send a templated email (it’s usually something like “your site is hosting copyrighted content we own the rights to: this content needs to be removed immediately”) and boom! the content is gone!

So, where do I enter into this? Great question, because I don’t. Why would copyright holders pay a random idiot to argue random internet commenters about copyright law? They wouldn’t, they don’t need to. Some copyright holders such as disney have teams of lawyers to handle this stuff - those people are paid. If I were one of them, I wouldn’t waste my time with all this text. I would just email the instance owner a cease and desist and escalate from there.

Is it is some project or business to make USA copyright convention a world wide standard, ignoring that even in Joyce’s home focus of Ireland the work is no longer copyrighted?

You’ve got a great imagination. No, again. But let’s think through this again, instead of just taking my word for it.

Authors produce a peice of work and copyright it, usually with their government, if their government has copyright law. I can’t imagine James Joyce had a copyright office when writing their first works. But how, then, are you reading my words?! THE INTERNET!

The internet fucked everything up. Governments were and are still trying to control the laws in their country, but we’re sharing data across the globe. Not to mention, governments typically don’t exist to protect copyright holders, they typically exist to you know… run a country and what not. Governments can and are influenced by money, and that affects copyright laws, yes.

So, “is this some project or business to make USA copyright convention a world wide standard” is a little strangely worded. Let’s take disney for example: disney made a movie, and that movie is copywritten. Disney is in the US and so we’re talking about US copyright law. Copying a disney movie and watching it in Egypt is illegal by US law. Great, so who’s going to enforce that? I don’t know, ask legal eagle or something. It’s an interesting topic but I don’t really care to try to guess at international law. If pressed, I would say that it might take a major international event to do anything to the person in Egypt but technically I guess they could arrest them if they set foot on US soil, including maybe embassys.

But that’s watching or consuming content, who cares! And yes, largely copyright holders don’t go after consumers of content, they go after distributors. And therein we get to the crux of the issue: websites are content distribution platforms, and distribute content. Copywritten content on a platform is then distributed, making the site admins distributors and thus subject to law.

But who’s law?! Well, the law of the land of the copyright holder, of course. You can totally send cease and desist letters internationally, even if the people don’t need to comply. It’s scary and it gets results. And reasonably, people can argue that the laws of country xyz apply to a site because the site can be accessed in country xyz. This is where we get into the concept of “gating” or limiting access to content by geographic means. It sucks but it keeps the sites up and operating.

So bringing it back to you… I saw that you were copying the entire book here, and I was curious if that was under public domain. Knowing the general fuckery of these copyright holders I assumed it wouldn’t and found the link to the foundation that analysed the works. That document said 2035 for this book, but if you’re saying that the book was published in ireland well this is fascinating if true but also I don’t really care. I don’t even know who this author is (though I’ve heard their name) and I know these are old books so I don’t know who would even send a cease and desist letter to begin with.

Going around openly saying you are out to demonstrate other people are idiots…

Those are your words, not mine. I’m not interested in trying to demonstrate other people are idiots. I am an idiot and i own up to it, nothing more than that.

I think is a pretty well paved path to try and drag down societies in total. “The chief deficiency I see in the skeptical movement is its polarization: Us vs. Them — the sense that we have a monopoly on the truth; that those other people who believe in all these stupid doctrines are morons; that if you’re sensible, you’ll listen to us; and if not, to hell with you. This is nonconstructive. It does not get our message across. It condemns us to permanent minority status.” ― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

Great book, though I haven’t finished reading it myself.

Again, sorry if I miscommunicated. I am harsh around people who push harmful misinformation or have bigoted views towards others. But when it comes to topics like this, I’m just interested, and having a conversation.

Remember, I posted the link to the archive.org page. I’m a bad little boy too… or whatever. Information wants to be free. Capitalists want to profit. Hell, other people want to jump in and claim other peoples profits as their own as well.

The main draw for all of this passion is that I’ve been a web developer for many years, I’ve seen how DMCA takedowns work and how effective they are. I want to see lemmy thrive, and I know a lot of users and new admins are getting into this and may not understand some of the risks they are taking. Reddit, on the other hand, is a company that has lawyers to deal with these things, and who know what is and isn’t posing a risk to them by being online. There’s no such resource for lemmy. I guess you could say I’m half-assed trying to be that resource. But yeah, for this book, from ireland, for this author, with a link on archive.org already, you’re probably fine.
