      I read the comic as a sarcastic critique of Longtermism (Wikipedia), which (AFAIK) technically does not presuppose that, but in practice is sometimes used with that assumption to justify actions in the present.

        It does not presuppose that, but the the key value (as per Wikipedia) is “positively influencing the long-term future”, which literally means improving life. So rejecting longtermism would actually counter this.
