    I look at art like this and have no idea how impressed I should be. Modern artists can reference photos to get every little detail precisely right.

    This, assumedly, was painted relatively quickly employing a subject who couldn’t hold still, likely had different lighting at various points and generally screwed with perspective.

    I’m deeply impressed with work like this that, I assume, accurately portrays the subject with near photo realism, while also having loose, flowing textures that convey real emotion and depth.

    I vaguely recognize the artist’s name, so I’m sure we, as a society have agreed it’s good stuff, but it could just as easily be a nobody and I wouldn’t know.

      Yeah, I love his other works and so I’m kind of glad to see him here, but it’s just a portrait, not the kind of things he’s rightfully famous for. You can see the way he works with colour is pretty good here though! Not photorealistic really, just dripping with experience.
