I don’t understand what the downvotes are for. You guys really think Valve aren’t out for money? They’re not your friends, they’re a company. Sure, they have developers who make crazy shit as a passion project, and leadership that generally knows to just let them do their thing, but if you think it’s not for the expressed purpose of making money, you guys need to be disillusioned…

At the same time they leave a whole lot of money on the table by paying employees to work on projects that never come to an end, their big advantage is that someone has enough sense to have them support their products long term and to not have them release most of the incomplete products they could shovel out onto the market, contrary to Google.

Valve would have more money in its coffers by just making sure Steam stays the most used platform and by investing in ways to monetize stuff on it (cards, in game objects…). I’m sure they didn’t end up making profit from the Steam “PC”, controller, VR headset, Alyx…

To an extent I disagree. Valve is a fully privately funded corporation with no investors. They aren’t like other corporations who’s biggest goal is to return profits to shareholders above all else. Without shareholders, and with Steam basically being a money printer they don’t have a clear reason to be doing everything in the pursuit of money.

Not having investors doesn’t make you a non-profit, the goal is still to make money
