My cat always insisted on coughing up a fur ball onto the carpet. Didn’t matter if she was in the middle of the giant tiled kitchen and dining room, the second she started hacking it up she made a beeline for the carpet. Pissed me off to no end, I actually struggled to hold her over the tile the one time I caught her so I could clean it without having to break out the carpet cleaning supplies at 2am.
Sometimes when my cat is unhappy with his litter box (even after I clean it) he goes on a carpet. Never anywhere else. Always a carpet.
Mine does the same, usually directly in front of their litterbox as an act of protest.
