Kbin is a link between them in that sense. If you want the experience of both in one place kbin has the most compatibility.
Edit: for clarity all three federate with each other actually. Lemmy uses the activity pub tech for threaded forums style content, mastadon for microblogging, and kbin natively supports both threaded discussion and microblogging (à la tweeting).
