I dont get this, why is nearly every single leading scorer from the new era?
Why is it never like „yeah he played in the 70s and is leading scorer off xyz“
You can check that, i am not talking bs, its hard to find a leading scorer that was in his prime between 1970-90
Why?
A think the single biggest factor is that the rules are different now. There are several examples of rules changes that have come in during the last 50 years that would increase scoring. The backpass rule, 3 league points for a win (it used to be 2), stricter foul rules and substitutions all come to mind.
You’ve still got some players:
Eusebio (Benfica)
Greaves (Spurs)
Uwe Seeler (Hamburg)
Muller (Bayern Munich)
Gigi Riva (Italy)
Fernando Gomes (Porto)
Pelè (Santos)
Roberto Dinamite (Vasco da Gama)
Zico (Flamengo)
Liverpool (Ian Rush)
I’m probably missing out on a lot of players too.
Kane overtook Greaves
My bad
Check the list of top scorers in the English top flight here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_football_first_tier_top_scorers
Out of the top 50, I get 8 predominantly in your new era and a similar number in the 60 to 90 ish bracket (expanded a bit to make a similar time period).
Yeh the argument doesn’t really hold in English football.
If that’s what they’re looking at, OP could be looking at top Premier League scores? I really hate how the record of so many gets overlooked with our focus on the prem.
I did wonder that for a second. I really hope OP isn’t wondering why there are no Premier League top scorers from before 1992.
