AFAIK, Peertube uses ActivityPub as well, but are Lemmy instances federated with them? I don’t seem to see Peertube instances on my feed. It be cool to see Lemmy comments appear below Peertube videos.
Peertube channels seem to show up like communities in Lemmy. For example: [email protected]

Ok, I tested commenting, and comments actually appear on the PeerTube side (https://tilvids.com/w/41f5284e-b79e-4c84-97e5-664a6ac5a1ee shows my comment). On the lemmy side, only my comment appears (https://lemmy.ml/post/1979848)

I’m not sure what’s going on with comments. Existing comments on peertube don’t seem to show up on Lemmy.

Just commented on a video from here, and it surfaced on the NewPipe app that I used to watch it. Really cool.
Communities -> Posts -> Comments = Channels -> Videos -> Comments (I think). The two platforms map to each other pretty cleanly.
Noting this doesn’t appear to work for kbin.social - you can find the community (magazine) and subscribe, but it doesn’t appear to be bringing in any content aside from some comments in the Microblog section… might be a federation issue.
If you are the first person from your instance to subscribe then there won’t have been any content sent to your instance yet. Could that be it?

Yea … I suspect this is a decent demonstration that in a few ways, the ultimate fediverse client is the browser. However nice the UI in an app is, it’s all bespoke for the particular platform it’s designed to work with. Once the fediverse does something interesting like connect with a completely different platform, any app is likely to have problems, because it’s design is so particular. The web though is universal for the fediverse.
Without wanting to be critical of all the work that goes into mobile apps, from a bird eye perspective, I often wonder if it’s a bit of a waste of fediverse developers’ time when more fundamental and reusable software is needed, including libraries/frameworks for making it easy to make more universal mobile apps.
To be honest, having good frontends for accessing the fediverse on mobile devices isn’t really a waste of time, as it helps introducing the fediverse to more people. It’s also more convenient for some users, I prefer to access Lemmy through Jerboa for example.
But there are always possibilities to increase compatibility and ease of use between the diverse ActivityPub platforms, there could be something like “templating interfaces” for different content formats, for example. I think it’s mostly a matter of time and adoption, the more users something has, the more developers we can have, who’ll be interested in making things more accessible and frictionless.
I agree with you about the tempting templating formats. I’ve used pandoc as a rough model for the idea in the past.
And yes, I agree about introducing more people through apps probably works well.
As an overall phenomenon though, I’m just not convinced that we wouldn’t all be better off sticking to the browser and having devs improve web UIs and platforms and the software stacks, but that’s me.
Otherwise I do worry about glue willing developers are to work in things together in things that are not platform or app specific. So far the platforms are all silos AFAICT.

You may need to wait for your instance to retrieve the content.
I’ll still try it with Jerboa, but it worked really well through the default UI (accessing your instance directly through the browser, as in feddit.nl/c/[email protected] for example)
I just tried subscribing to [email protected], but it’s empty despite the peer tube channel having many videos. Any idea what’s going on?
It’s usually that you were the first to try to access the channel from your instance. So your instance has to federate with the other instance, which can take a while to fully take place (and I think that it only tries to get pre-federation content on request). I think that if you tried again, you should now see some content.
Very cool. Population of videos takes a while, but at least the ability is there. I still wonder how practical it is.

One, it was intentional, because I wasn’t sure if there was going to be some lag trying to download the posts there. Two, the example link here doesn’t work because the videos are actually on !metastatistical.pt@spectra.video
This is insanely cool! After dipping my toes in with Lemmy, I’m now tickled to discover all the plug-and-play aspects of the expanded fediverse!
They show up just fine for me on Mastodon which is pretty neat.
