There is a surprising amount of free space in this phone, I have other mods in the works. Especially if I can find a replacement battery. It’s a surface Duo 2.

Sorry, I had a better title, but it didn’t let me post it. The back glass of my surface Duo 2 fell off and shattered. So I printed a new one.
You can edit the title on Lemmy.
I’m not seeing an option for that. Edit only changes the optional text.
IDK what client you’re using. I use web and Connect. On web, edit option makes the titled editable, too.
The top looks 3D printed. Maybe they made a new cover?

Missed opportunity for using micro pattern print plates or fancy infills like hilbert curve. On the plus side the design of the phone is so unique that I immediately knew that Microsoft doesn’t like the right to repair movement.
I could potentially do that, I have to do the other side as well. This phone was designed poorly, the magnets are doomed to rip the back glass off eventually.
This is a warranty replacement device for this same issue.

Damn, this makes it even more infuriating that they don’t offer replacement parts :(
I think the worst part is that they have jumper cables attached to the glass, so as it was pulling off the nfc and phone speaker would stop working.
you can do it directly in CAD too. I put carbon-fiber textures on the back of my phone cases I sell. It’s way more realistic feeling compared to the build plates that have the pattern on them.
It’s basically just a ton of little rectangles offset from each other. Then I ensure the bottom/top line direction is [0,90] in cura. You even get that cool depth effect when viewing at certain angles.
Where did you put the blackjack and hookers?
This is the way.
And on the plus side, your new printed cover will be significantly less likely to shatter again. Unless you try really, really hard, anyway.
I have the other side to print as well, and if I ever find a replacement battery I was thinking about making the battery removable. There’s a lot of wasted space in this phone.
Oh you meant physical space inside the phone and not data storage space.
Yeah, there’s approximately 3mm around the battery, which was almost free floating in the phone. When the back glass fell off, the battery came out with it.
That space may be there for safety reasons. Aging or mishandled lithium-cobalt batteries tend to swell. Giving them space to swell into reduces the chance of a fire or an explosion.
If you’re going to cram a larger battery into that space, be very careful of what kind you use, or you may find your phone literally burning a hole in your pocket.
I’ve had plenty of swollen batteries, the double sided tape I’m using would give way pretty easily to that luckily.
New Lemmy Post: The manufacturer doesnt make replacement parts available, so I made my own. (https://lemmy.world/post/9137364)
