Whatever the name, naming heatwaves the way we name storms can only help spread awareness of the current climate crisis and the necessary measures to put in place. We need to show charts with these names over and over so that people start connecting the dots between their lifestyle and the threat to their life.
I agree, I think the names help and this one is scary as it should be. Like Lucifer last year. Hellish names make total sense with killing heat waves.
I expected this article to say that it’s not actually a heatwave, because it’s not a regional phenomenon. That this is just summer + El Niño + current levels of greenhouse.
But well, apparently there is an anticyclone. Does not reassure me, though, that the next anticyclone is in just a few days…
In the autumn it’s usually cold and rainy, so can we name that rainy period too?
If it’s usual what’s the point? These named heat waves are far from usual. You name dangerous and exceptional phenomena.
Well, that’s exactly the point. We keep seeing these heatwave headlines every year, so is it really that exceptional? In any case, you’re right about the harm aspect though, so in that sense rainy autumns don’t really fit the description.
They’re becoming normal yes, but they’re still exceptional. Most people were born with a very different weather.
