Hello guys! I’m wondering what you guys are using and which anime tracking sites do you deem the best. Currently I’m using MyAnimeList, used AniDB but later on still returned to MAL even though AniDB seems more advanced. Not saying that MAL is bad, but I’m wondering if there are any alternatives worth using/supporting instead

I use Anilist because it has the best API. The best API means that it has first-class support across every single app in my anime “stack”:

    • MAL-Sync (Webextension)
    • Miru (Desktop viewer)
    • AL-Chan (Android client)
    • Saikou (Android viewer)
    • Saikou TV (AndroidTV viewer)

I am using Anilist via AL-Chan app to keep track of what I am viewing. I have also an account on AniDB that I update when I finish an anime. And lastly I use MAL-Sync extension on Firefox to auto update episodes I watch on AniList!

Thanks for the tip about MAL-Sync. I abandoned MAL for Ability years ago when they had one of their periods of stupid decision making but syncing would be nice.

No way I’m truing them up manually after all this time.

Also, I tend to use livechart.me on my pc to scout out next season’s anime and the AniTrend app on my phone which is linked to my AniList account.

I got a similar setup, but instead of AL-Chan I’m using Taiga to keep everything tracked since I watch most of my stuff downloaded on my PC.

Taiga also helps with finding torrents, which can be nice.

Thanks for the recommendation on Taiga, I definitely needed that since I struggle at matching AniList to what I have on my PC

I mainly use Anilist with Taiga to auto track my watching. I also use the Automail userscript for some bonus stuff on anilist, and douki to sync with MAL every once in a while.

AniDB seems to have the best database, as its name implies, so I go there often to look up minor credits like episode directors or song composers. It also has tools to track your locally downloaded library for those who like to build their own collection.

I’ll throw my list in here cause its my first comment on lemmy https://anilist.co/user/Pencilsharp333/

i am not one to rate anime with stars or take notes. i use sonarr to grab anime and it has coincidentally turned into my anime tracker.

The big two are Anilist and MAL. Both have their pros and cons. Anlist supports a variety of rating approaches (particularly nice if you want to do sub-integer rating), but MAL allows greater customization of your list.

Usually it’s really more of a matter of how you interface with them (or others) since by and large their core functionality is pretty similar across the board.

Sub integer rating sounds like a nice thing! Sometimes I miss the 0.5 step and simple 1-10 ain’t really enough. I’ve used more rigorous scoring to achieve a better view of what I liked more on MAL which is a good thing, but nevertheless, I still miss that .5 I just might give Anilist a shot, I hope it supports importing from MAL

Hi, I migrated from MAL to Anilist a few years ago, I’m pretty certain it does import from MAL

It does support, I’ve just openned an account! It supports only importing from MAL actually, and it offers it during the profile creation. Now for the other way around, AniList doesn’t support exporting, which is kinda lame… but seems there are third party offline and web tools that actually can extract data from it, which is nice

You can also use 1-100 scoring, but it’s essentially the same as using desimals, just looks prettier I guess.

I hope it supports importing from MAL

It does, you just need to export your list from MAL and import the file to AL.

AniDB is superior but it has three downsides:

    1. Terrible, terrible defaults, extremely confusing if you don’t customize it.
    2. UI is weaker compared to Anilist.
    3. No manga tracking. That’s a big one if you like manga.

But it has the B.E.S.T. database by far and it’s highly customizable. I use AniDB, if you opt for it, you can send me PMs here and I’ll help setting it up.

If you’re looking specifically for a tracker, try monthly.moe. It’s just that, a very nice tracker which doesn’t try do anything else (it will still show you links to AniDB, Anilist, MAL etc. on each show’s details page)
