You could do the same for sleep. Lack of sleep definitely makes me more irritable than hunger.

i shut that shit off using /gamerule doInsomnia = false
i fucking hate that entire mechanic
if i had my way, sleeping in a bed would do something else entirely such as:

        1. Present the option to create a backup save of the world snapshotted to that moment
        2. Restores satiety to the same level as your hunger bar but does not restore actual hunger
        3. Gives a “rested” buff of health boost/absorption, luck, haste, and night vision that will last almost until noon in-game. bright eyed and bushy tailed!
        4. perhaps all of the above.
        • I like phantoms AI but I hate how they are tied to insomnia AND they endlessly respawn effectively instantly so fighting them is entirely pointless.

If insomnia phantoms were required I’d limit them to say, 5 per night. Once all 5 are killed, no new ones spawn for that night.

That would turn them from a nuisance to an actual threat the player wants to fight

Idk about that. With sleep I can at least tell I am tired, with hunger it always feels like guesswork. Like am I clinically depressed or do I need a nice sandwitch?

Yes, but at the cost of your character missing some interactable objects and aiming becomes a little more difficult. After too long, then make it affect health.

Your character starts randomly weaving over-complicated, nonsensical conspiracy theories about other characters and events in the game.

“Oh my god… the sweet old lady who lives next door is with the Illuminati! I have to kill her before she gets me!”

No wait this is actually an amazing idea, if you let your hunger meter/other resource go down far enough, it gives you unskippable objectives to do HORRIFYING things.

Get a bit too tired? You get an objective to break into someone’s house to sleep. Have to kill someone to do it? Too bad.

Too thirsty? That old woman’s IV bag looks like a great hydrator.

      Hungry? Let’s hope you aren’t near any children’s hospitals…

I don’t get hangry so I’ve never understood it. But I know it’s real and usually try to direct their attention away from angry and to food. I’m scared if I spend too long with someone they’ll realize what I’m doing. Hangry people, would that upset you because I might try to get you to eat when you’re actually angry?

Just don’t patronize me. “You’re just hungry” will make me angrier.

Don’t even mention it, just throw food at me. I will know what you’re doing, but deep down I’ll also know that you are right and will eat silently. In five minutes I’ll very likely say that I’m sorry for being a dick.

To be clear I am usually a very friendly person and when I am in a mood like described above I had a very stressful day and didn’t eat for 24 hours, so this is an extreme example.

I’d never say “you’re just hungry”. I’d be worried that I’d try and get food asap but they would then get angrier because “I’m not just hungry right now, I’m actually angry” and i didn’t recognizethat. Of course I would apologize, but maybe you can see my point.

My wife is particularly bad at getting hungry. I’m fairly blatant about feeding her, when she is. Had grumbles from her about it, but very few complaints.

Low blood sugar, I will drop things, shout and generally have a complete breakdown as it gets worse. Though I don’t direct it at people anymore, I can retain that much control. It’s horrible and can bring you to literal tears, like a deep melancholic depression. I guess your brain really needs that good shit to function.

if I haven’t realised it by then, then you’d just be helpful in making me realise that I’m not actually mad at anything, my body is just going into primal fight mode because I’ve forgotten to eat

if I’m actually angry and my stomach is full I’d say it outright, but wouldn’t be upset because it’s a valid guess looking at my normal behaviour

this said, when I’m hangry, close me in a room with food and don’t interact until I re-emerge lol, I get very grumpy

I don’t get hangry but my wife is the classic model of someone who does. I know now to keep snacks or plan for food breaks while we’re out. She’s tiny and I’m the one who gains weight somehow.

Same. I fast for 2-4 days straight regularly. People I work with, can’t go without 2-3 hours without snacking on something to “get their blood sugar levels up!” 🙄

And a sleepy meter where once filled it seems like the whole game hates you and you get cranky

remember: if you hate the world: eat some food; if the world hates you: get some sleep.
