Don’t people have any hobbies, passions, or anything better to talk about? Politics and news are such boring conversations, full of intentional outrage and strife. I sure wish that we as an online community could break away from the divisive machinations of the disreputable media.

You don’t get to say “we as a community” after judging everyone and demanding everything to change to accommodate your personal preferences.

Like it or not, news and politics are important topics. Block the communities sharing and discussing those if you don’t want to see that.

There are lots of hobby communities, art, music, games, mechanical keyboards, fancy pens, gardening, birding, I could go on…

I find new hobby communities often on All. There’s also a community for announcing new communities, that might help you round out your interests.

If you go on the Lemmy website you can browse a never ending list of communities (some apps may also have this? Idk). And more are added every day. Lemmy is still young and growing. Have patience. Or don’t, I’m not the boss of you.

Some people like politics, some people like computers, some people like makeup, some people like rock climbing. Why do you care what someone likes?

It’s not that I care what people like, it’s surprise that politics is so massively over-represented compared to other interests in the all feed. I was hoping to stumble across some new interesting communities, but it’s almost all bad news and politics, but I repeat myself.

Block the news and politics communities as you encounter them. Should improve the feed for you significantly. It’s happy to work with you, but you have to tell it what you want.

I normally do stick to my subscribed feed. I was hoping to discover new communities, but it’s almost all news and politics.

Thanks for the advice. I have been doing that, but despite blocking dozens of them, more keep popping up. That’s what led to this post, being surprised by the sheer volume of it. Perhaps it would help if I stick to local so I don’t have to contend with every community across every instance.

As someone else mentioned, a lot of this is related to bots basically pulling & posting from RSS feeds, but even aside from that, it’s the next easiest type of post to make outside of shitposts tbh. There’s always something happening that’s being reported in the news to share a link to, and there’s always something going on with politics.

Other subjects also have a lot going on, e.g. there’s also arguably a disproportionate amount of tech news being posted, but some other subjects take longer for anything of note to be shared/posted about, whether that’s scientific research or entertainment. Books, movies/shows, music, games, they all take longer to make and there’s not a ton many of them are allowed to discuss or share during the production process, so not as much to share or post about until the run-up to release, & after they’re released.

Besides all of that, I think a lot of people are still figuring out what they even want to post & discuss here outside of news/tech/politics/shitposts and meta-conversations like this.

Those are all great points and I appreciate the perspective. I guess I’m kind of in the same boat, not knowing what to post since the communities aren’t fully formed yet. Like I wanted to discuss a movie a few nights ago, but I checked the movie communities and there were only a few members, so I posted it to a private sub on Reddit which is the only one I still visit. I’d like to see more conversation here outside of news, politics, and tech, but I suppose I should be part of the solution and post some stuff myself. I’ve never been a big poster, mostly a commenter, but since Lemmy is young and growing, I’m sure other people like me would appreciate the interest related posts. Yes, I just decided, I will be more active about posting the type of content I’d like to discuss and help build the communities. Cool.

Why are you subscribed to news and politics communities if you don’t want to see any of that content? Or, why don’t you just block those communities? Are you suggesting those communities just shouldn’t exist? Don’t make the rest of the fediverse cater to your whims because you’re too lazy to curate your own feed.

Plus, it’s fun to see how you were downvoted. People here really want to shove their stinky politics down your throat
