I really like The Cynic Clinic so I wanted to share this video that provides some insight on school roofs which we often don’t really think about.

The point he was making about fossilized tropes that are not really relevant to us in the modern day, but have stuck around is something that you see everywhere in media once you start looking for it. An example you see a lot in both Western media as well as anime/manga is that cities are teeming with ne’er-do-wells that will accost/cat-call women and gangs are lurking in every alley. Cities were much more dangerous decades ago when a lot of the media establishing these tropes were made (Taxi Driver, etc.).

However, modern day cities are much nicer and safer (especially so in Japan). I have gotten lost and wandered alleys in the city where I work (major east coast US city) and have never had any issues over the past 15 years. I am not saying there aren’t issues as my wife has been cat-called a couple times over that time period, but it is nothing like you see in anime/manga. Basically every chapter of Rent a Girlfriend has multiple men walking the street call out how beautiful Chizuru is for example.

My school’s rooftop is effin dirty and sooty. Ain’t no way I’m eating lunch up there. There’s alot more amenable places to eat when I was at college. We even had a McDonald’s in the school.

My highschool rooftop wasn’t so bad. We had a garden up there and watched the sunrise once during an overnight activity. It wasn’t a common hangout place though as it was really hot. Most people who do go up there like taking photos.
