Hello guys. I am in need for some advice/suggestions in wiring few ip cameras. This is a personal project for my parents and also gives me a chance to learn something new. I would really appreciate some feedback, as I have been delaying this project by wondering what would be the optimal way.

• House info:

  • multistory building

  • no ethernet or coax outlets inside

  • has boiler, water heated hvac system

  • outside temps range from -20º - 100ºF year round

• Equipment:

  1. 6x Reolink cameras
  2. NVR from reolink - RLN36
  3. Netgear gs108pp POE+ switch
  4. 500ft Cat 5e ( I have to order it )
  5. RJ45 ( I have to order it )
  6. Available ladder length 7ft tall

• Work done so far:

  • 4x cameras drilled and installed at 10ft above the ground at the corners of the building.

• Requirements:

  • the NVR, needs to be in the detached garage, so that there is less clutter (also harder to reach) at the

house.

  • Current plan involves 4 cameras because its easy, but I need to be future proof as I have to install

one camera in mailroom and the other in laundry room

  • ISP modem needs to be relocated in the garage and a Ethernet outlet needs to be installed in the

building where the ISP guy just drilled through the walls (My plan is to bury the coax in a conduit, run

it to the garage and then run a ethernet from the modem to the hole in the building like how the

coax was and inside the house router will connect to it).

• My Dilemma:

  • I don’t want to drill holes and run the wires from inside the house as it would require going through

floors and tearing the walls up (i know thats the best way, if there is a easier way that doesn’t require

tearing up a lot of walls please suggest).

  • I first thought to do this step as i could run the wires from the basement but since the basement is

furnished (drop ceiling and regular painted dry walls) I am not sure how to achieve this.

  • Running cat 5e exposed around the building with the clips. But unsure how to route the wires to the

detached garage (reolink suggests to bury it).

  • if I bury the wire how would i route 4-5 cat5e’s?

  • First thought was to use a PVC electrical conduit. Should I run a 10ft tall conduit vertically

against the building and then another pvc conduit through the trench?

  • How would I wire the laundry cam, do I drill a hole through and through the laundry room

to the bricks and splice it in the pvc conduit?

  • How would I wire the mailroom room? the walls here are furnished unlike laundry room.

Do i just cut up the dry wall and run the wire out? Not sure how this would be achieved.

  • wouldn’t this setup allow malicious actors to easily trace the wires and cut through the conduit?

  • Do i need surge protectors even if I bury it in a PVC electrical conduit? is that good enough for

lighting and surge protection

  • My dad’s suggestion is to run the cables exposed like i mentioned and then just go all raw by drilling

holes in the detached garage (aerial route). This is just ugly setup because there are 0 zero wires

going aerially to it and i don’t want it to change. Also besides aesthetics, the garage is not very tall (6-

7ft from ground) I could literally just snag the camera without jumping if I do aerial wiring.

  • Should I buy Cat6/6a? or 5e is good enough? I was thinking to go with shielded cat5e but there are so

many brands like truecables, primuscable, vizio, cables2go. Which one should i choose regardless of

cat type? any suggestions (some reddit posts suggest go with the branded ones, idk which ones they

are lol)?

  • I might be overthinking few things like malicious actors etc, please suggest/criticize/advice. I would

be saving huge money for my parents because someone quoted them $3k+ for 6 cams and I will only

take love and equipment money from them :)
