Gacha games cultivate an inherent expectation of freebies, especially during significant events like anniversaries. Betraying this expectation, as seen here, can easily lead to player frustration and protests. It might seem entitled to an outsider, but for veterans, this expectation stems from the established norms of the genre.

This protest isn’t about quitting the game. Like you said, they don’t hate it. They’re just asking for more fair treatment within the established system.

I used to play Genshin Impact. I dropped the game around the time of the Rosaria Bust Nerf Incident, not because of that incident but because I just wanted to play other games. I recently was going to reinstall the game but changed my mind after seeing it wanted like 175GB of disk space.

I play a lot of gacha games, and I know a lot of them give away free stuff all the time. But expecting free handouts, even complaining about not getting enough free handouts, is just sad. The game is already free, that’s handout enough. If the developers send you an email that just says “Thank you for playing our game,” then that’s more generous than they have to be. I don’t ever expect free handouts from a game. If I like a game I spend money on it, if I dont like it then I don’t play.

“We don’t want to spend money to support the developer, just give us more free stuff while we cost the developer more money by using their servers without paying.” Its hard to feel empathetic in this situation, I have to be real.

Really, the real fight they should be having with is the gacha drop rates. Or the gacha system entirely. But that will probably never happen.

Friend, they run a one of the most profitable gambling apps for children. There’s no need to worry about “supporting the developer”. The rewards in Genshin have always been bad, protesting when they get worse is warranted.
