I think we’d get very far by just splitting armed and unarmed police. Your regular beat cop doesn’t need a gun to issue traffic tickets, investigate crimes, direct traffic, or assist emergency crews. Maybe give them a special uniform so the public knows they’re unarmed and thus not a threat.

It seems to work well in other countries, I really don’t get why we don’t do that here in the US. I think it would work really well.
