Hello, Tamers! We’re here to share with you an open letter to the community, to reach out to you. We’ve been listening to you for a long time, and we are aware of your concerns and worries. Over the past few weeks we've seen an uptick in the community expression of unhappiness and doubt following the lead-up to, and the announcement of Temtem: Swarm.
That’s what happens when people forget the roots of something and just use it as they like. It was never 3 separate words. It was “Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game”. The first word modified the second word.
When you just say Massive, Multiplayer, and Online, you’ve missed the point. Doom was Massive and Multiplayer and Online. It was NOT an MMORPG, and not even an MMOG.
You’re the entire problem with the interactions people have with Lemmy.
MMO is its own distinct term, it modifies any genre it is applied to, it has never just meant a different type of RPG, it just started that way and people want to gatekeep for whatever reason.

I agree with you on the MMORPG point, but Doom has never been Massive unless there was a 200 player mode I never saw.
(And if there is, I want it)
Words change.
MMO just means large player groups sans lobbies. Can be any type of game.
What’s with the gate keeping?
Who calls doom an MMO? It’s not massively online. It’s online and small groups.
