We have Chris Claremont to thank for Mangeto not being generic villain of the week and actually a character who in his own way is fighting injustice.

The older I get, more I agree with Magneto.
More like, the older the character gets, the more they update his backstory to be something the audience can sympathize with. Because a villain for villain’s sake gets old fast.
