I don’t think the sanctions affected Huawei’s sells in China that much. Probably they even improved after they introduced HarmonyOS. I guess that “Huawei was dead” was just some good old American propaganda
It’s dead everywhere else because they can’t use Google Play Services.
Anyway, I don’t think the goal of US actions is ever to stop or kill anything completely. After all there’s money to be made in the “problem” coming back again and again.
I think this is an important point people who mock the US don’t get.
They’ve switched their brand to Honor everywhere else and it’s business as usual.
Indeed. Until they a bit too popular and then miraculously a sinister connection to the CCP will appear out of nowhere.
Huawei is still very popular here in Turkey.
Four facts to consider:
-
Huawei had no problems at all selling their phones in China. They were already 100% google-less before the ban, and after the ban it was the “patriot choice” to get their phones
-
iPhones are banned for people who are working for the Chinese government; there’s a fear campaign that says that the American government can hack them
-
The Chinese iPhone app store is now a restricted list of carefully whitelisted apps from the Chinese government, and in order to be whitelisted the app must be published by a developer that has a presence in China with a specific content license. So now the iPhone is a dumb phone that can run tencent/Alibaba/bytedance/pinduoduo apps. If you’re thinking of an iPhone app, it’s probably unavailable in China. At least with android you can sideload whatever you want (and often in the rom there’s a shim that allows to unofficially install the Google play store and services), but with the iPhone all you can get is those few apps.

You can get similar build quality for a quarter or a third of the price. There are no carrier discounts, you need to pay the full price, which in cities that are not Shanghai are several months of salary. And if you need to show that you’re worth, it’s much better to take a foldable. I saw many women with a zflip worn like a necklace or a zfold worn like a bag
Seen those four reasons, there’s no surprises iphone isn’t the “default” option like in the US
Huawei had no problems at all selling their phones in China. They were already 100% google-less before the ban
Wat? Weren’t they running Android with Google Services?
iPhones are banned for people who are working for the Chinese government; there’s a fear campaign that says that the American government can hack them
After Snowden, nobody can seriously sit there and believe the USA doesn’t have access.
No, Google Is completely blocked in china so it wouldn’t make sense to pay a license for their play services
Fun fact: I had to hard reset my pixel in china and I had trouble to even pass the welcome screen as it would say that the wifi network wasn’t working, because they ping a Google server
Bro, Google Play was banned from Huawei in 2019. In response, they started making their own alternatives. The ban came before Huawei moved to HarmonyOS. HarmonyOS was launched in 2019.
Huawei had no problems at all selling their phones in China. They were already 100% google-less before the ban, and after the ban it was the “patriot choice” to get their phones
You were wrong. Plain and simple.
where do you live?? Google play was banned in China in 2010. That’s NINE years before huawei was banned in the rest of the world. It changed absolutely nothing for them, in the chinese market.
Every single manufacturer, including Samsung, when targeting the chinese market, they don’t include any google service
It’s like if a vegan gets banned from mcdonalds. “Oh no, anyway”, he’s going to say

That implies it was dead at some point. It never was.
Anglo corporate media not declaring the collapse of China challenge (impossible)
China will collapse and Japan will be the worlds largest economy.
Although finally maybe potentially China will decline within the next few decades simply due to population reduction.
When did it die?
It didn’t and they make good phones, but without access official access to Google play, you loose a lot of things ,especially with more casual users that don’t want to sideload. Also, some apps won’t work without the play integrity api, for example banking apps, making it harder to gain traction outside China.
I have an Huawei phone and it’s honestly the best phone I’ve ever had
Xiaomi >>>>>>>>>> Huawei
I’m a big fan of Huawei products. Incredible build quality and reasonable prices. I personally don’t care if the CCP spies on me so it’s not a big issue for me.
Kudos for the honesty.
The way I see it is NSA have backdoors, Russian, British, Australia and Canadian etc agencies will also have backdoors, what’s one more?
This is a dumb perspective at best and a fatal perspective at worst.
Go on, you can’t call me dumb and not go into more detail
Nah, you aren’t dumb. I think the opinion is dumb, but I’m sure you have reasons for believing the way you do. I suspect it comes from a sense of hopelessness and feeling a lack of control which I can empathize with but do not share. I simply don’t like to see people roll over and give in to such thought because of the types of awful people who have power in this world. This mindset is submissive to those powers and that irks me to anger. That submission boosts the power they already hold. But no, I hold no negative opinions toward you as a person and I apologize if it came across that way, that’s likely my fault.
It’s not that I’ve given in, I just simply do not care. But I respect the right to a users privacy and will happily fight to get that right for people. I personally just do not care however. I don’t really know why, It’s just not something that bothers me
In no way different from using iOS, Windows, or stock Android. You’re basically saying “I don’t care if the USA spies on me”.
And the frustrating thing is that there aren’t many alternatives for phones. Alternative Android ROMs have limited compatibility, and some manufacturers (esp. Lenovo/Motorola) like to play games with revoking warranties when using alternative ROMs.
My next phone is going to be a Pixel, not because I like Google or the phone itself, but because GrapheneOS works on it. I just want a simple smartphone, I don’t even care about the camera or other features, I just need a browser and a handful of basic apps.
I wish the Pinephone had better battery life, I’d totally use it.
Americans are already spying on you through Google and Apple.
Me too. The D15 is great laptop and runs Linux really well. Fantastic build quality, hardware, and battery life… for USD 700$.
Besides, I get lonely if only the Americans are listening.
