I feel this way, posts can be hijacked after becoming trendy to be replaced with ads, or there could be other ways to exploit this. If there was a title in the typo, then it’s easy to delete the post and re-publish it. But what could be use cases of having to edit a post title after publishing? Just add edits in the post body.

I think it’s generally a bad idea to eliminate a potentially useful feature because some people might abuse it.
It seems to me that far and away the better choice is to leave the feature in place along with some way to deal with those who do abuse it if and when they do.
And conveniently enough, deletion and bans - both of which are already within an instance owner’s power - are ways to deal with, respectively, threads that have been maliciously edited and those who edit them.

I feel like edits within a short window should be allowed for error correction. After that it should probably be locked.
If it’s left unlocked, either temporarily or permanently, there should be an edit history akin to Wikipedia to track the changes.
I think this is the best solution. It allows you to fix a mistake if you notice it in the first 5 minutes, but after that it’s locked for posterity

I like being able to edit the post title and link. But I think editing the link specifically is a little bit risky. Putting up legit links, then slightly changing them later could be used to phish people.
As for post title and post body, I don’t really care. People could put ads in the post body as well. There’s a tradeoff that has to be made between utility and security.
I would say let it happen for now and if it becomes a problem we can revisit later. AFAIK this should be able to be changed in a Lemmy update, so we’re not forever locked into one option.
Is there an indication when a post has been edited?
In case of a typo it is good to be able to edit it. I’ve already done this a few times.

Just show edit history. For titles and comments. This happened a lot on Reddit when I was moderating there. Someone would write an abusive, or doxing comment etc. comment would be removed. They’d edit the comment the complain about it being removed.
Only work around we had was to screenshot comments when removing them.
Seeing edit history would be great. could even give mods the ability to revert, if worried about advertising. Or just if someone does it. Remove it. Ban them. Whatever. But as of now, you’d have no way of knowing.
I can absolutely see that happening. Perhaps only allowing edits for a limited time after posting or only before a certain number of interactions (votes / comments) can be a reasonable way to allow edits but prevent abuse
Reddit did it because of hijacking and trolling. Imagine having the top post of all time be edited to some really edgy shit, after it had already gotten there?

I was on reddit for a long time, and I don’t remember ever being able to edit a title. I don’t know if it ever happened, but it seems like there are better ways to prevent abuse than a total lockdown.
I think the only way to get a title edited was to DM an admin. As you can imagine, they didn’t do it often.

I meant it as in “Reddit never allowed you to edit titles because…”. Not that they retroactively took a decision to stop you from doing it.
