Myanmar military loses control of key town on Thai border, rebels say, in major win for anti-junta resistance

Rebels kicking ass with no military assistance from US

“Myanmar rebels fighting the junta say they have seized the last remaining military base in a key border town, dealing the latest significant blow to the country’s military rulers as they struggle to cling to power.

About 200 soldiers abandoned their base in the southeastern town of Myawaddy and have been pushed to the No 2. Friendship Bridge linking Myanmar to Thailand following an attack Wednesday night by Karen resistance fighters, a spokesperson for the Karen National Union told CNN Thursday.

“Officially we (are in) control of the town Myawaddy since last night,” KNU spokesperson Saw Taw Nee said. The loss of the major trading point with Thailand was “a big issue for the military,” he added.”

Isn’t the Junta a direct consequence of western meddling in Myanmar’s affairs? Why would the US fund the counter part to their own creation?

they’re a military coup that overthrew the democratically elected government. this coup was largely in response to US sanctions on military officials resulting from Rohingya genocide and a loss of power in the 2020 elections. so, you could say that it was a result of US meddling in the same way the israeli/palestine confict is or even 9/11 was.

The Palestinian issue is 100% a western creation, so I’m not sure that’s the example you’re wanting to pick…

Thing is the Rohingya genocide is a direct consequence of Aung San Suu Kyi’s release, which you may remember was the political prisoner darling for human rights of the western world.

it’s definitely a western creation, but not wholly a US creation. British and French started it all, and the US’ involvement with peace treaties created a backlash resulting in assassination of Rabin and the rise of Netanyahu.

              how was her release related?

When she ascended to the office of state counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi drew criticism from several countries, organisations and figures over Myanmar’s inaction in response to the genocide of the Rohingya people in Rakhine State and refusal to acknowledge that the Myanmar’s military has committed massacres

That’s far from the genocide being a direct consequence of her release. Actually, that doesn’t say that at all

One of the issues with the resistance is that they’re an alliance of a lot of smaller groups. So if they win, there’s the potential risk that they eventually all go against each other instead of transitioning to a proper government. The current junta however has been involved in a number of scandals & genocide over the past years that you might’ve heard about. I guess things eventually got bad enough.
