Maybe I’m too dumb for kbin - Why are there so many different types of post/microblog? How does federation work? If someone follows a magazine on another instance do they see all of the posts and microblog posts from that magazine?

The microblogs in a magazine are federated from Mastodon hashtags, if you follow a Mastodon user you’ll see all their posts in the microblog section. Mastodon users see all threads and Microblogs if they are following a magazine (in theory; actually I’m not sure if this is working), and all user threads, comments and posts if they are following a user. Lemmy users will only see threads and comments. Kbin is a bit of a bridge between the two!

If you follow Mastodon users and Kbin magazines, in your “subscriptions - microblog” section you will see posts from all the Mastodon users you follow, plus all the microblog posts in magazines (which might have been created through “new post” in Kbin, but more likely have been federated from Mastodon and channelled into those magazines by matching hashtags), so following a magazine here is a bit like following a hashtag on Mastodon, in the microblog view, but you also get the threads in the threads view. #Kbin could replace #Mastodon for me once it is a bit more mature and has a decent app - it offers the best of both worlds.

I’m not entirely sure what happens if you post a #microblog in a #Lemmy community, probably it will federate to your followers but not to the community. Maybe this needs experimenting with!

(btw, I’ve only been on here a couple of days so feel free to correct anything I have got wrong!)
