This will be the one thing that causes Lemmy to fall…… pure burnout. It’s 2 guys making nothing and thousands of winey folks expecting this to be Reddit overnight.
On another topic, there are rumors circulating that we are fascists or supported genocide.
This is the part that I think will make it more difficult, since I imagine there are quite a few devs that would rather contribute to projects by less politically-outspoken project owners.
(I would also note that they don’t deny being tankies, and tankies tend to insist they aren’t fascists. They also deny the Uyghur genocide so they have that going for them too.)
This exactly. I’m a software engineer and I’m itching to contribute to one of these systems, but I do not agree with some of the stuff I’ve seen posted by one of the developers of Lemmy. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth about the whole thing.
Same here, despite the fact that Lemmy is built on Rust and React which I find far more technically interesting, I’ve decided to help out on Kbin, which is fullstack PHP.
I’ve at least heard people defending PHP recently. Supposedly it’s, uh, better than before.
That said if there was a community fork of Lemmy that people started organizing around I wouldn’t mind seeing if there was something I could help with.
I wish I could have Kbin but in Rust + React (would be far more useful for me to learn than modern PHP). Guess we can’t have it all
Yeah, I’m probably going to bite the bullet and start working on Kbin too. I’ve avoided PHP for my entire career just by chance, so all I know are the memes and what I’ve read of (usually older) codebases. From what everyone says, modern PHP isn’t really that bad, and from what I can tell when perusing the Kbin source, the implementation is pretty clean.

I keep hoping to see a small group of Rust devs fork Lenny and just take it over and make it non-tankie, and then hosts can switch over to that codebase and the original devs can fade into obscurity.
Completely makes sense they are slammed with development issues. I hope more people can offer help on that front. I can only offer money to their cause.
re: claim of devs supporting genocide… I’ve seen this claim made multiple times, but never seen it backed up. Anyone have sources where they have made such statements?

His “rebuttals” to the common knowledge of the Uyghur genocide occuring in China is primarily nobody commenters on Twitter/Medium, or obvious Chinese propaganda outlets. I gave up looking for reputable information in that list.

If you read the grayzone article, it claims the UN itself never reported on camps.

I get the feeling people like this are willing to split hairs over the word ‘massive’ and ‘camp’ and claim the whole thing is false because of these 2 words, even if there are prisons for uighers.
To be clear, I WOULD AGREE with a lot of the devs posts about the USA. All of these empires commit crimes. I just don’t like people who get hung up on ‘capitalism’ OR ‘communism’ being the ‘true’ way, because to my mind both systems fail to decentralize power enough to prevent authoritarianism, and so both systems fail (it is my opinion that the current state of the world shows that mixed economies beat out both). But people in one belief camp or another will lie and minimize the crimes of their camp out of ideological belief in the concept, believing that selling the concept undoes any evil they do in lying about details.

I know it could be annoying to some users, but a stickied donation request post might do some good in better ensuring they have the funds they need. Especially with the Reddit migration happening now.
